Identification of closely linked markers for wheat leaf and stripe rust resistance genes and virulence monitoring in open land populations of wheat leaf and stripe rusts (IdMaRo)

Leaf and stripe rust belong to the most important wheat leaf pathogens causing yield losses of up to 60 %. Aims of the proposed project are (i) the development of molecular markers for leaf and yellow rusts and their verification, (ii) to gather information on the virulence of leaf and yellow rust populations in Germany and Europe, (iii) to stack effective resistance genes in double haploid (DH) lines, and (iv) the utilization of new resistance genes from crop wild relatives which are so far not included in the current breeding material as well as the introgression of these genes into modern wheat varieties.
